2014 LA Event Recap

2014 Events

STARS SHINE AT THE DESERT 9-13 & 14-2014!

On one of the hottest weekends of the year, 19 teams from all over the Western U.S. arrived in Rancho Mirage to compete in the Western & Pacific Qualifiers for the EWGA Cup, which will be December 7-8 at Troon North in Scottsdale, AZ.  Each team was comprised of 8 women, for Match Play Four Ball on Saturday, Singles on Sunday. The L.A. Chapter fielded 3 full teams – more than any other: the Stars, Co-Stars & Starlets. All played in the Western Qualifier, which meant some of our team members had to compete against other L.A. players for the coveted Match Points. In sizzling temperatures, each of our teams garnered more points than any of our previous teams, and two of our teams qualified!

  • 1st Place (7 ½ points): L.A. Co-Stars (Wendy Michaels, Wendy Barnard, Laura Kumazawa, Laura Kennedy, Cecilia Worcester, Alice Belcher, Janice Okanishi & Angie Charky)
  • 3rd Place (7 points): L.A. Stars (Lauren Suzuki, Rowena Pedrena, Darla Huff, Mary Ellen Knowles, Yvonne Guerra, Kathy Malmfeldt, Valerie Montellano & Nina Guttman) and
  • T-6th (5 points): L.A. Starlets (Deanna Hammerli, Mary Ayers, Carol Grosvenor, Jayne Geisler, Roberta Kantola, Barbara Trivison, Laura Perry & Karen White).

But the weekend was not just about golf!  There was lots of fun, food, drink, laughs, shopping, casino stops and friendships forged within our chapter and with our EWGA sisters from other areas. Barb was a big winner – she won both her golf matches, a jackpot at the casino & also won the 50/50 drawing!  Thanks to all the competitors, and especially Lauren, Laura Kennedy & Roberta for being team captains, Roberta & Laura Perry for organizing Saturday night’s dinner, Barb for donating 4 pairs of sunglasses (won by Carol, Wendy M., Roberta & Laura Kumazawa) & Wendy B. for hosting the cocktail party. Well done, Ladies!  See photos on our Facebook Page!

Palm Springs Getaway 4-26 & 27
Congratulations to our Match Play team as we tied the Palm Springs/Desert Cities Chapter and kept the trophy we took from them  last year. The Palm Springs Getaway last weekend was lots of fun, and the local ladies were very gracious.  Congrats to Wendy Michaels & Rowena Pedrena for Closest to the Pin on Saturday, Val Robbins (PS) & Kathy Jackson on Sunday.  Enjoy your Roger Dunn cards!  Snippets: Roberta H.'s green toenails matching our team shirts; Rowena's club sticking in a tree, needing a ball retriever to get it out; DeeDee's birdie (net eagle) on the Par 5 #8, followed by the "Birdie Bottle" of Fireball provided by our opponents; Deanna's mastery of the Par 3's in match play; Kathy M.'s chip-in for birdie from 65 yards on #2; and more fun!  If you couldn't make it this year, be there in 2015!!

Robinson Ranch 4-12-14
We had great weather for our Robinson Ranch outing on April 12th.  20 members & 3 guests played.  Judie Chinskey had so much fun she joined the same day.  In the Silly Socks competition, Mary Ayers won, with Anita Gillis coming in 2nd.  Barbara Trivison won the optional pool for Most Fairways & Judie won the Chip-In pool.  Rowena Pedrena & Teri Esteban tied for Closest to the Pin on #3 and Laura Kennedy won on #11.  Enjoy your Roger Dunn cards!  Thanks to Teri Esteban for being the Event Captain, and to all who came out and played.

Kick-Off Event 3-15-14
We had a great turnout – 36 members & guests – for the yummy breakfast buffet, membership program & vendor show at DeBell’s Canyon Grille, with 16 staying for golf.  There were 9 guests, and 4 new members, including a returning charter member.  Most of the guests said they were joining & we look forward to seeing them again soon!  We had an informative talk on handicaps from our sponsor & HC Chair, Carol Grosvenor, and a presentation on The First Tee of Pasadena (recipient of half the proceeds from our drawing) from Board Member Laura Morrison.  There were lots of prizes & business with the trunk show.  We saw deer, great shots, flubs, shanks & good putts on the course, and most of us made at least one new friend! Thanks to Laura, Lauren, Karen, Angie, Barb, Mary, Carol & Kathy for a job well done, and to our sponsor, CG Financial Services -- The Right Financial Advice Carol A. Grosvenor, CFP® www.CGFinancialServices.com

Rio Hondo 3-9-14
26 members & guests played in the sun March 9 in Downey.  The game of the day was “Tee for Two” – a team game with the highest & lowest score of each group ignored & the middle scores counted for the team.  Winners were Cecilia Worcester, Deanna Hammerli & Mitchi Shibata – each gets a $10 discount to their next event.  Cecilia also won a $25 Roger Dunn card for closest to the pin on #17; Kathy Malmfeldt equaled that on #7.  Barbara Trivison & Wendy Michaels split the optional  chip-in pool, which included a carryover from Hansen Dam.  Wendy also won “Low Putts”, with 32.  Thanks to Karen Krull & Maureen Kelly, the event captains!

Santa Anita 1-12-14

36 members & guests came out for a Colorful Start to the New Year!  New member Deanna Hammerli scored big, taking the chip-in pot, closest-to-the-pin on #4 & being part of the winning Pink Ball team with Cecilia Worcester, Karen Krull & Joanne Williams.  Guest Noelle King had closest-to-the-pin on #12 & joined that night!  Lauren Suzuki won the low putt pool with 31 & Janice Kuwahara's vibrant pink sox helped her win Most Colorful Outfit.  Well done, ladies!  Thanks to Laura Kennedy & Darla Huff, our captains, & Roberta Kantola, our photographer - check out our album on Facebook

Robinson Ranch 10/11/14

A lot of fun at Robinson Ranch yesterday! We had a small group (15) & the course threw us a few curves (changed us to split tees with earlier tee times without letting me know, forgot to put the closest to the pin markers out) but everyone rolled with it. Thanks! Apparently my fall didn't hurt my golf game, as I won low putts & shared the chip-in pool with Alice BelcherLaura Kennedy & Coral Hawthorne. We did a random drawing for 2 $25 Roger Dunn cards & a 2-some at RR (donated by the guilty pro staff). Roberta Kantola won the 2-some & Alice & Laura Kumazawa won the RD cards. It was nice to have new members Debra Lissebeck & Holly Schroeder join us. Thanks Angie Charky & Laura Kumazawa for help with registration, and Debra, Yvonne Guerra & Judie Chinskey for volunteering for the Events Committee! We also saw some of the OC Chapter gals who had a practice round in the a.m. Kathy Malmfeldt

Angeles National 8/9/14

A great but a little warm day at Angeles National Golf Club for The Chip 9 and Wine. A big thanks to Alison Curdt and Ben Krug for putting together a great clinic for us today. Ben met us in the club house after golf and answered more questions and gave tips and suggestions. Alison couldn't join us as she had to get ready to compete in Wegmans LPGA Championship in New York this coming week. There were a couple of voluntary pools today and Laura Perry was our low putter with 16. No one chipped in so there will be a carry over to the event at Westchester Golf Course on September 27th.

2014 EWGA SoCal/Desert Semi-finals

Thanks to all who participated in the 2014 EWGA SoCal/Desert Semi-finals at Oak Creek in Irvine! In addition to Champion flight Low Gross (& overall champ!) Lauren Suzuki, Carol Grosvenor had 1st Low Gross in 2nd flight, and Angie Charky had 2nd LN in 4th flight. Lauren & Carol each advance to the finals in Tennessee in October. Cecilia Worcester took 2nd LN & Laura Kennedy was 3rd LN in Flight 1; Kathy Malmfeldt took 2nd LG & Leslie Wallstedt, 2nd LN in 3rd flight; & Wendy Barnard, 3rd LN, 4th flight.

Buenaventura 7/12/14

7/12/14 Fun, breezy day at Buenaventura. Congrats to Teri Esteban for closest to the pin on #5 & Cecilia Worcester on #11, they each won $25 Roger Dunn cards. Teri also met a new friend & potential new member in the cafe afterwards. Janice Kuwahara cleaned up with her short game - taking both pools - chip-in & low putts (30)! Wendy Michaels has a lot of new best friends after winning the random drawing prize - a twosome donated by the course. I had the distinction of hitting a negative yardage shot - my fairway shot hit the yardage marker (why do they put them in the center of the fairway?), came backwards40-50 yards, narrowly missing my playing partner, Joanne Williams! Thanks to all who came out! (Kathy Malmfeldt)

Nine and Unwind 5/17/14

A fun and warm day at Nine and Unwind at Altadena Golf Course. Voluntary Chip in pool was won by Laura Kumazawa. After being sidelined with a broken ankle for months, this was only her second outing after getting the ok to play. Laura chipped in on the 9th hole. Barbara Trivison won low putts with 13. There was also a team game - who got the lowest score with the colored ball; team 2, Roberta Kantola, Janice Kuwahara and Barbara Trivison came in with the lowest with a 57 and each won a Roger Dunn gift card. We all gathered in the cafe for appetizers and awarding of the golf prizes. There was an additional unwind drawing won by Wendy Bernard, Judie Klug-Chinskey and Mary Ayers - each won a bottle of wine donated by BT.
