2018 LA Event Recap

1/13/18 Griffith Park Harding

It was summer in January this weekend at Harding! Glorious day, great weather, ok, maybe a little bit too hot for January... we sold out the event, but lost 5 due to the nasty flu/cold that's been going around. Take Care & Get Better! Thank you to our captains: Laura Kumazawa & Judy Mirick!!  Game of the Day was Lucky 13 - you guess your score on 1, 3 and 13. There were 5 people that guessed exactly their scores on those holes -- unfortunately at the time of publication, we didn't have their names. Sorry, but congratulations!  You're all great prognosticators! Congratulations to other game winners: Karen Share & Yvonne Guerra closest to the pin winners! Kaoru Wood took home low putts with 29!

1/21/18 Member Mixer

Thank you Roberta Kantola for hosting the event at your home, and thank you Laura Kennedy for taking care of the menu -- she made most of the items from scratch! Jennifer Wilson hosted a putting game and Golf Pictionary ... the team led by Super Sketcher Judy Mirick won in a landslide - wasn't even close. It was great seeing everyone, thank you for coming out!!

2/10/18 Industry Hills

Industry Hills was cold, but our competitive juices were flowing, as was the champagne in the last two groups celebrating birthday girl, Lauren Suzuki! Jennifer Yguico was also celebrating her birthday with us. We were delighted to have first timers Meryl Lande, and Pauline Lomelin join us. The game of the day was Queen of Hearts, which challenged players to rely on their own accuracy to hit the fairway, reach the green in 3 strokes or less, and one-putt. Rising to the challenge was our Queen, Laura Kennedy, attended by her Ladies in Waiting, Lauren Suzuki, Debra Lissebeck, Debra Dowling and Donna Coleman. A sucker pin placement on #13 didn’t stand in Lauren Suzuki’s way of scoring closest to the pin, while Edith Apuya did the same on #14. Many thanks to Tri-Captains, Kaoru Wood, Jennifer Wilson and Liz Gnerre for devising the game, providing Valentine-themed goody bags, and awarding the prizes, which included a sought-after jewel-bedecked tiara and queen of hearts ball marker!!

2/24/18 Westlake Prep School Water Practice

The 20 intrepid ladies who took on Westlake Village Golf Course’s abundant water holes at Saturday’s PREP School event worked hard to conquer their fear of this common hazard. Each player was armed with a cheat sheet of helpful advice from pros (“What water?!?”) which included official and local rules on what to do should one’s ball goes for a swim. Participants who found themselves in that unfortunate outcome were consoled at the conclusion of the round with a sleeve of new balls. Several players unsuccessfully attempted to skip their ball across the drink, much to their partners’ amusement. We eagerly welcomed new members Toni Johnson, Sioux-z Jessup and guest,  Lisa Caiozzo. It was also nice to see Kathy Smith and Sheryl Ball, who haven’t joined us in awhile. Kaoru Wood and Donna Coleman walked away with closest-to-the-pin honors and were the ONLY ones to avoid the water! Liz Gnerre took the low putt pot with 31. Afterward, a few members went over the new Canoga Park Roger Dunn to show our sponsor some golf-love!

3/12/18 Membership Kick-Off

A special thanks to An Marie Ekfeldt, LPGA Instructor and teacher at DeBell Golf Course, who gave a talk on the Mental Game of Golf
and to  17-year-old Leila Dizon,  ambassador of The First Tee & 2015 finalist in the Drive, Chip & Putt Contest, as well as
winner of several
SCPGA Jr. Tour events. She gave a very inspiring speech and
told us she practices 2 hours every day -- THAT'S dedication! Thanks, ladies, for your support of us and to women's golf! Congratulations to Holly Schroeder who won a prize for bringing a guest AND for taking home the 50/50 prize to raise funds for The First Tee -- WINNER WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER! Then, 8 ladies braved the rain -- looks like they had fun!

3/24/18 El Cariso Prep School Match Play Practice

Saturday’s event at El Cariso was a fun day practicing match play! We welcomed new member, Alex Moroch, and held 7 match play practice rounds. Below are the match results:
Donna Coleman vs Joyce Mussenden (W)
Laura Kennedy vs Lauren Suzuki (W)
Angie Charky (W) vs Barbara Trivison
Laura Perry vs Jen Yguico (W)
Liz Gnerre (W) vs Jen Wilson
Kaoru Wood vs Roberta Kantola= all square
Debra Lissebeck vs Kathleen Wheeler-Strong= all square
(with Alex not far behind in her practice matches with them)
The winners were entered in a drawing for a prize, which Debra won. It was a fun practice and a great 19th hole!

4/14/18 Simi Hills

Last Saturday 4-14 The Happiest Place on Earth was Simi Hills Golf Course as a full complement of LPGA Women Who Play gathered for a Disney-themed day of golf under sunny skies. Many attendees embraced the spirit with Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears, clothing, and pins. Co-Captains Janice Okanishi and Mitchi Shibata offered games rewarding low scores, long drives, accurate par-3 tee shots, and random luck. The 7 Dwarfs changed hands faster than thieving crows could steal food from our carts!!

As we enjoyed refreshments on the veranda, the day's big winners were announced.  Andrea Zimmer and Jen Van Harte won the flighted long drive contest. Low scores on 5 randomly-selected holes secured the Hidden Mickey's top prize for new member Diane Nabrzeski. Out of the 10 lucky holders of the Seven Dwarfs after 18 holes,
Christine Ramirez was chosen at random for the top prize. With pinpoint accuracy, Jayne Geisler and Joyce Mussenden won closest-to-the-pin honors. Prizes included Mickey gift bags, Mickey golf pins and RD gift cards. We welcomed new members, Diane Nabrzeski,  Sioux-z Jessup & Toni Johnson, several guests, and were happy to see some old friends as well. Great job, Captains!

Lastly, we all wish Jennifer Wilson
a very speedy recovery from her appendectomy the night before our event.

5/5-6/18 Cal Cup

The LA Stars were shining brightly in broad daylight as they competed in the 12th annual Cal Cup tournament at the Sycuan Golf Resort in El Cajon. Led by Captain Laura Kennedy, team members Lauren Suzuki, Debra Lissebeck, Wendy Michaels, Kathleen Strong, Donna Coleman, Holly Schroeder, Kaoru Wood, Angie Charky, Barbara Trivison, Liz Gnerre and Kathy Malmfeldt competed as partners on Saturday in better ball or alternate shot match play format, switching to singles matches on Sunday, against teams from up and down California, as well as one from Northern Nevada. Wins by partners Deb/Wendy, Angie/Barb, and a match ending all square for Kathy/Liz put 2½ points on the board Saturday. The team doubled their success Sunday with wins by Lauren, Laura, Kathy, Liz, Barbara, and an all square by Angie, giving the Stars a grand total of 8 points. While it wasn’t enough to win the Cup (Fresno took it home with 12 1/2 pts), it improved upon the team’s 2017 score and there is nowhere to go but up. Joining in the Fun Play division, resplendent in Dodger Blue, were Joyce Mussenden, Jayne Geisler, Cecilia Worcester, Karen Share, and Nancy Reid, who came away with a closest-to-the-pin prize. Donna and Joyce instilled team spirit with cleverly-themed goody bags. As a wacky diversion, Angie carried her teammates Laura, Liz and Nancy in the Big Break competition Saturday afternoon while other team members relaxed poolside. Cal Cup gave the team a chance to renew old friendships, make new ones, and spend a girls golf weekend with some of the great members that make up our chapter. Go Stars!

6/9/18 LPGA Women Who Play Championship Semi-Finals

Our Chapter was well-represented at last weekend’s LPGA Women Who Play Southern California/Desert SW Semi-Finals, held at the Santa Barbara Golf Club. The course was in great shape and the weather was perfect as our 8 singles and 8 scramble team members teed off in a shotgun start. Four hours and 30 minutes later, our own Donna ColemanLori Baker and Lorrie Davis each took home a first place in their flights, thereby qualifying for the Championship Finals in Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, FL. Laura Kennedy took 2nd gross in the Championship flight, losing low net in a card-off, with Kaoru Wood taking home a 3rd net in the 2nd flight. Additionally, Lori Baker won Senior Low Gross AND won the 50-50 Raffle! Special thanks to Roberta Kantola for the many postings and photos from the event.

(L. to R.) Laura Kennedy, Alma Robles, Liz Gnerre, Elise Anderson, Jen Van Harte
Lorrie Davis, Cecilia Worcester, Barbara Trivison, Jayne Geisler, Donna Coleman
Roberta Kantola, Joyce Mussenden, Kaoru Wood, Diane Nebrzeski, Lori Baker, Mitchi Shibata

6/16/18 Oak Quarry

Conquer the Rock. That’s the catch phrase for Oak Quarry, formerly known as Jensen Quarry, a major source of marble and limestone first worked during World War I, and site of our June event. Offering a spectacular setting of sheer walls surrounding holes with fanciful names like Biotite Bluff and Opal Outcrop, the course provided challenges and scenery not normally seen in the LA Basin. In a shotgun start, our group of 32 wended our way through a course that featured floating hawks, cottontail bunnies, and improbably, chickens, which seemed particularly attracted to Debra Lissebeck.
The theme of the day was School Pride with players showing theirs in all manner of hats, shirts, socks, ball markers, pennants and pom poms.  Captains-of-the-Day Kathy Malmfeldt and Pat Martzen provided the group with lots of fun opportunities to win prizes with Closest-to-the-Pin, won by Donna Coleman, Low Putts, split by Laura Kennedy and Wendy Michaels with 30 apiece, and Chip-Ins, captured by Kaoru Wood. The main game of the day was Low Net, which included the opportunity to purchase Report Card Repair, entitling the buyer to subtract their three worst “grades.” Apparently Pat Martzen studied hard because she took first place with a low net of 42, with Liz Gnerre and Kathy Malmfeldt tying for second with net 47. Liz also won the school pride outfit prize for her UCLA get-up, cheered on by a quartet of Bruins.
We were happy to welcome newcomers Melanie Maass and Linda Hinchey, and welcome back Sharon Miyamura. We were delighted to see Roberta Hagopian return to action, and to send best wishes to Holly Schroeder for a speedy recovery from surgery earlier in the week.
If you missed out this year, be sure to sign up next year for this unique golfing experience.

6/23/18 Vista Valencia

There was stiff competition on Saturday at Vista Valencia Golf Course for our June PREP School event which focused on the best ball format. Match play brought out the competitive side of us! Valerie Montellano and Carol Abernathy were all square against Janice Kuwahara and Jennifer WilsonKaoru Wood and Donna Coleman won their match against Laura Kennedy and Kathleen Wheeler-Strong. And Angie Charky and Edith Apuya beat Roberta Kantola and Liz Gnerre
It was a great practice session for the upcoming LPGA Amateur Golf Cup!  We were delighted to welcome back Barbara Bloom and Carol Schmiederer, and so pleased to have our three newcomers/guests, Yosune “Jo” GeorgeCecilia Cheng and Melissa Davis, join us. The highpoint of the day was a surprise visit fromHolly Schroeder, who looks fantastic and is recovering nicely.
Thanks Jennifer Wilson for organizing a fun day!

7/14/18 Knollwood

LA Chapter Leaves Knollwood in Shambles !!!
At the end of our LPGA Amateur Golf Association -- LA Chapter July 14th event, however, the Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills was as pristine as we found it. “Shambles,” was the game of the day, which gave players a chance to compete as a team. Destroying the competition, if not the course, was the foursome of Mitchi ShibataJanice OkanishiEdith Apuya, and Jennifer Gapasin-Yguico. Edith and Jennifer were also winners of closest-to-the-pin. The three-way tie for chip-ins was split by Cecilia Worcester, Judy Mirick and Roberta Hagopian. Cecilia and Roberta also claimed the low-putt prize with 27 each.
In what some might describe as a leisurely round, Captains-of-the-Day Donna Coleman and Judy Mirick provided not only a fun day out on the course, but dished up some mirth as well. A thieving squirrel stole Donna's Tupperware and scampered up a tree with it, but was compelled to drop the goods after getting pelted by her foursome. Judy entertained the crowd with a trick tee shot that veered left, hit a tree, ricocheted across the fairway, hit another tree, and landed right back on the tee box, just behind her. The mercury may have been a tad high, but couldn't match the warmth of this great group of women.

8/11/18 Olivas Links

Fun in the Sun at Olivas Links Golf Course! 34 gals showed up in their tropical golf outfits sporting their favorite flip flops! Who says you can’t play golf in your flip flops?!? Donna Colemanand Pauline Lomelin both won prizes for playing the 18th in them! Debra Lissebeck managed to stay out of the sand the whole round and was rewarded with a prize. She also won Closest to the Pin on hole #4. Mitchi Shibata stuffed it close on hole #17. And Laura Kennedy showed that practice practice practice rewards you with only 29 putts to win lowest putts! I need some lessons from you, Laura! Pauline LomelinBarbara TrivisonDonna ColemanLaura KennedyLiz Gnerre and Linda Hinchey all had chip-ins. Mary Ayers won the grand prize $25 Roger Dunn Gift Card. A special thanks to Cecilia Worcester for being the Co-Captain and new member Melanie Maass for helping with the check-in. Post round appetizers at Buenaventura Golf Course were the perfect ending to a perfect day! See more pics on Facebook!

8/25/18 PMS Cup at River Ridge

The LA Stars headed out to River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard last Saturday to compete against the LPGA Amateur Golf Santa Barbara Chapter in our annual PMS Cup (Perpetual Match-Play Series) event, first held in 2001. We had 8 two-person teams compete with heart and determination against a tough SB squad. While the overall score ended in a 5½ to 2½ win for our opponents, the Stars showed good depth, and turned in solid performances.  Sporting our eye-catching star-studded uniforms, we definitely won the outfit competition. Many thanks to competitors Laura Kennedy, Jen Van Harte, Wendy Michaels, Judy Mirick, Kaoru Wood, Edith Apuya, Holly Schroeder, Barbara Trivison, Mary Ayers, Angie Charky, Jen Wilson, Melanie Maass, Liz Gnerre, Kathy Malmfeldt, Janice Kuwahara, Pat Martzen. And a big thank you to the team organizer, Debra Lissebeck! We'll get 'em next year.

9/8/18 LPGA Amateurs Cup Western Qualifier

The Cup: I see Stars everywhere!
LA Stars, LA Co-Stars and LA Starlets

Three teams of 8 women competed in the Western Qualifier for the LPGA Amateurs Cup this past weekend at the Mission Hills Golf Resort in Rancho Mirage, CA. The two-day event included pairs and singles against teams from Seattle, Sacramento, Tucson, Houston, San Antonio, San Diego, and Orange County. All three of our teams played their hearts out in 110-degree-plus temperatures and while they didn't finish high enough to advance to the finals, they represented our chapter with skill, grace, and a GREAT deal of style. Special thanks to our hard-working Captain Debra Lissebeck for her organization, leadership, and infinite patience. For a gallery of photos documenting our participation (thanks to our diligent and thorough Social Media Director Roberta Kantola) head over to our Facebook photo page.

9/15/18 Tierra Rejada

September means back to school and 29 players reported to Tierra Rejada to work on the basics for this month’s event. The weather was perfect, the views were great, and we were so happy to welcome new member Stacey Melquist, and guests Stephanie Corredino and Mandi Yuen. ABC and 1-2-3 were the games of the day and golfers needed accuracy and their A-game to make the grade. The golf course was greedy, gobbling up all but 6 player’s balls in the ABC (Anywhere But the Canyon) game. Kathy Malmfeldtwas the lucky winner after her name was drawn at random from the survivors. 1-2-3 offered rewards for first on the green, closest to the pin and holing out in less than 3 putts. Jen Van Harte and Mary Ayers tied for first place, and Denise Winslett’s name was drawn from those tying for 3rd. Our closest to the pin winners wereMary Ayers and Stephanie Corredino. Special thanks to tri-captains Carol Abernathy, Jen Van Harte andLiz Gnerre, and to Debra Lissebeck for all her help.

10/13/18 Montebello

Scary weather wasn’t enough to stop the LPGA Amateurs LA Chapter from having a spooktacular time this past Saturday at the Montebello Country Club! In fact, a few raindrops was the last item needed to brew up a game of witches, b&tches and toads. Over 30 costume-clad players left the clubhouse to compete in a fun spirited golf game with a few tricks & treats along the way.

With a bag of candy, a few toads, and lots of chances to win prizes, each player strived to win points for the most fairway drives, closest-to-the-pin hits, and lowest putts scored. Congratulations to the final game winners Molly HolmgrenKaren KrullMandi Yuen Chen and Sharon Miyamura!  Showing us some tricks, Barbara Trivison and Joyce Mussenden  took overall lowest putts, with Mitchi Shibata and Karou Wood driving closest-to-the-pins.

The final treat of the day was provided by the fab-BOO-lous participants in our Halloween costume contest. Cruella Deville (Laura Kennedy) took 1st place, followed by our Wine Witch (Roberta Kantola) in 2nd, and our Good Witch (Debra Lissebeck) in 3rd. Thanks to all who participated!! (Editor's note: Thank you Kathleen Strong and Carolyn Thielman for organizing a very fun day)

10/27-28/18 LPGA Amateurs Cup Finals at Innisbrook, FL

Lori and Donna Compete at Nationals !!
Lori Baker
and Donna Coleman competed last weekend in the finals of the LPGA Amateurs Championship at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, FL. The two-day event included players from across the country representing their Chapters. Donna and Lori did our Chapter proud. Donna finished in a tie for 12th in the First Flight and Lori placed 14th in the Second Flight. When asked to describe the experience, Lori said "I flew into a hurricane of competition, and survived."
We are so proud of both of these dedicated members of our Chapter and offer them our thanks for representing the LA Stars so well. You'll find the full results HERE.

11/17/18 Hansen Dam

PJs and Pearls Predominate at Hansen Dam PLUS President's Cup Final Match Results

HANSEN DAM by Co-Captains of the Day, Denise Winslett and Molly Holmgren
Hansen Dam may never be the same. It was a beautiful day for many of our 43 lady golfers to wear their pajamas and pearls! There were holiday jammies, hockey jammies, golf jammies, silly animal jammies and so much more. We were the talk of the club house! There were lots of wonderful PJs out there but our winners of the best PJ contest were, hands down, Mitchi Shibata and Edith Apuya (as Eeyore and Kanga). They were adorable!! For the closest-to-the-pin contests, new comer Mandi Yuen and Wendy Michaels took home Roger Dunn gift cards. In the special game, the winners of low putts on 6 random holes, with 10 putts apiece, were cart mates Mandi Yuen and Liz Gnerre. Everyone had a fun day and took home a goody bag with a bath bomb, chocolates and more. After her winning streak on Saturday, Mandi Yuen joined the LPGA Amateurs - Los Angeles on Monday!!
-- Editor's note: Many thanks to Co-Captains Denise Winslett and Molly Holmgren for a job well done.

The two finalists in the President's Cup match play tournament were defending Champion Kathy Malmfeldt and low handicap challenger Laura Kennedy. In a spirited battle that see-sawed back and forth, Kathy emerged the winner with a score of 3 up with 1 hole to play. Congratulations to both competitors! Formal presentation of the President's Cup Trophy will take place at our Holiday Party on December 8th.

12/8/18 Holiday Party Scholl Canyon

A Very Merry Holiday Party

Our 2018 season went out with a bang as we gathered for golf at Scholl Canyon, followed by a buffet luncheon at Acapulco in a terrific holiday celebration filled with good cheer and great friends. The Holiday Party Committee (Donna Coleman, Lauren Suzuki, Barb Trivison, Angie Charky, Debra Lissebeck) outdid themselves, providing thoughtful gift bags and cosmetic kits for each member, along with a super useful booklet highlighting 2019 rule changes. They put together a fantastic assortment of gift baskets for the opportunity drawing and silent auction, to which many members donated items. The over $2500 raised in the drawings and silent auction help fund club activities in 2019, including after-round snacks at monthly events, and special event subsidies. As part of our Chapter's giving back to the community, we filled up 8 Toys for Tots boxes, and helped raise $315 for the First Tee in the 50/50 drawing, with Jennifer Yguico winning the other half.

Outgoing President Barbara Trivison was lauded for her leadership over the past two years by incoming President Holly Schroeder, who also served as MC for the day. Volunteers were recognized for serving as Captains-of-the-Day at our monthly events, and Board Members and volunteers were given gifts in appreciation for their service.Thank you to everyone who signed up to be a Captain at our 2019 monthly events and to serve on committees at our special events. In case you missed your chance to volunteer, we would still love to have you. Contact Debra LIssebeck for more information.

Laura Kennedy
and Roberta Kantola were richly rewarded for winning the day's low putts and chip-in contests, respectively. Edith Apuya stole the show for Most Festive Outfit with her Christmas Tree/Mrs. Santa outfit, facing stiff competition from many spirited entries amongst our uber-creative members. Special recognition was given to Jennifer Yguico as our Most-Improved Golfer, based on her handicap index improvement factor (she also won her flight in the National Biggest Loser contest). And last but not least, Kathy Malmfeldt was awarded this year's match play tournament President's Cup Trophy, defending her title and holding the distinction of being our Chapter's only three-time winner!

The festive day showcased what an extraordinary group of women make up our Chapter. We look forward to many more good times in 2019. For all of the day's photos, head over to our Facebook page gallery.
