2016 LA Event Recap

Holiday Shopping Day at Roger Dunn NoHo

We don't only love to golf, we love to shop too!  Over 30 members came to our annual Holiday Shopping Day at the Roger Dunn in North Hollywood.  We were welcomed to the store by new Marketing Director, Wendy Michaels, and her committee Yvonne Guerra, Coral Hawthorne, Roberta Kantola and Laura Perry. The fun started with our new President, Barbara Trivison, winning the first of six Roger Dunn $25 Gift cards donated by the NoHo store and our outgoing President, Lauren Suzuki, winning the second one! Other winners were Mitchi Shibata, Elise Anderson, Mary Ayers and Wendy Michaels. And Lauren Suzuki bested Caroline Gim in a playoff in the putting contest to win another $25 RD GC! Thanks to Dan and his team who answered all our shopping questions and to all who attended! Happy Holidays to all!

10/22/16 SHORT GAME SCARY? Clinic and 9-hole outing

Our October 22 clinic and 9-hole outing at Van Nuys Executive Course was great fun! Our instructor, Sue Schroer, provided our group with helpful tips and individualized instruction on the fine art of chipping.  Once groups headed onto the course for their post-lesson rounds, Sue also followed up briefly with everyone with some last-minute, on-course advice. Thanks to all who came out for this well-attended event. We look forward to more instructional clinics and outings like this in 2017!

10/8/16 Elkins Ranch Recap

Elkins Ranch Recap

Saturday, October 8 was a beautiful fall day at Elkins Ranch.  20 members, including brand-new member Carol Abernathy, enjoyed the course, with many taking advantage of the yummy burgers after the round.  Mitchi Shibata took the low-putt pool with 31, and Kathy Malmfeldt & Shannon Blair shared the chip-in pool. Joanne Williams (#7) & Holly Schroeder (#16) won the Closest-to-the-Pin Roger Dunn gift cards. Thanks to Judie Chinskey and Holly for helping with sign-in.

9/17/16 San Dimas Canyon ReCap

San Dimas Canyon ReCap:
After a few last-minute cancellations, we had 33 players on a relatively (!) cool day.  Families of deer were our spectators on several holes.  The course is generous to us with their donations, so we had closest to the pin prizes from them on all the par 3's - winners: Sylvia Torres (#2), Donna Coleman (#5), Debra Lissebeck (#7), Kaoru Wood (#10) & Janice Kuwahara (the dreaded #16). We also had Longest Drive on #17, won by DeeDee Carter. Low putts pool was won by Roberta Kantola, and Sylvia had the only chip-in.  Two President's Cup matches were played - DeeDee defeated Joyce Mussenden on the 19th hole in a playoff and Kathy Malmfeldt bested Shannon Blair.  Congratulations to all our winners!

9/24-25/2016 EWGA Cup Regional Qualifier Re-Cap:

2016 EWGA Cup Re-Cap:
Thanks to the 16 ladies who represented us at the Regional Qualifiers at Chardonnay Golf Club in Napa! Unfortunately, neither of our teams qualified, but all members fought hard in their matches.  The L.A. Stars (Captain Debra Lissebeck, Terry Henschel, Laura Kennedy, Wendy Michaels, Donna Coleman, Jayne Geisler, Roberta Kantola and Angie Charky) came in 8th in the Western Qualifier after losing a card-off.  The teams of Debra/Terry and Laura/Wendy won their fourball matches, and Debra, Terry and Laura won their singles matches. Roberta and Angie each halved (tied) their singles matches.  Terry flew in from her new home in Minnesota to help anchor the team!
The L.A. Co-Stars (Captain Kathy Malmfeldt, Roberta Hagopian, Jennifer Van Harte, Melinda Hipp, Judie Chinskey, Mary Ayers, Holly Schroeder, and Laura Kumazawa) also came in 8th in the Pacific Qualifier after winning a card-off.  The teams of Judie/Mary and Kathy/Roberta won their fourball matches, and Kathy and Melinda won their singles matches; Roberta and Jen each halved theirs.  Melinda flew in from her home in San Antonio to fill in when we had a late cancellation; Jen filled in with only a few days notice; Holly fought through severe food poisoning to compete both days, and Judie played with an infection and fever after recent surgery.  What troupers!
The course was beautiful, but had pretty difficult greens, some with several tiers, and there were many forced carries and/or tight fairways, winding through vineyards. Did I mention there were fun team dinners and wine? Be sure to check out the photos on our Facebook page. Judie & Mary, in their Saturday uniforms, and the full Co-Star team on Sunday, were featured in photos on the EWGA Connection Association newsletter front page.

Sunday 8/14 Olivas Links ReCap

Sunday 8/14 Olivas Links ReCap

It was a perfect day 8/14 at Olivas Links in Ventura .... 75 with cool ocean breezes. It even got a little chilly!  The day's big winners: Laura Perry won the 3 Witches game, and broke 100 for the first time! Laura Kennedy was closest to the pin on Hole #5 and Donna Coleman on Hole 17! Low putt winner was Carol Grosvenor, and Michelle Shrock, Kaoru Wood and Shannon Blair had chip-ins. It was Shannon’s birthday, so it was only fitting that she won the random drawing for a free twosome at Olivas! Jayne Geisler and Carol Grosvenor wore their matching Spyglass shirts, as they were just back from Pebble Beach. Thanks to Molly Holmgren and Holly Schroeder for being captains.

9/10/16 P.R.E.P. School Mini Match Play event at El Cariso

Thanks to all who participated in our P.R.E.P. School Mini Match Play event 9/10/16 at El Cariso.  We had a great mix of both match play veterans and those eager to learn more about this dynamic competition format. The morning began with a casual, informative presentation and Q & A session, followed by a fun and educational match play round on a challenging executive layout. Although El Cariso was a new venue for many players, it proved to be both an enjoyable and challenging course. We'd love to schedule more outings here in the future, so be sure to give us your feedback!

Sat 8/27 PMS Cup at River Ridge ReCap (Match Play v SB Chapter)

We had great weather and 8 two-woman teams for each Chapter in this fun annual competition.  We tied the match, each side with 4 points, but Santa Barbara won last year so they kept the Cup. Thanks to all who competed, plus the 7 who joined us just for fun.  Congrats to the following teams, Laura Kennedy and Donna Coleman, Lori Baker & Roberta Kantola, and Roberta Hagopian and Kathy Malmfeldt for winning their matches; and to Judie Chinskey/Mary Ayers & Laura Kumazawa/Yvonne Guerra for halving (tying) their matches.  The closest to the pin prizes went to Susan Watkins and Holly Schroeder, and Marty Poole of SB and Jen Van Harte won the random drawing for free two-somes at the course. Holly had her personal best of 90!  Roberta H. got attacked by a wind-blown curtain, spilling red wine all over, but don't worry, they refilled her glass! The golf, drink tickets, come-back certificates and BBQ chicken dinner were enjoyed by all. The chocolate mousse was a big hit! Let's bring the Cup back in 2017!

Santa Anita 6/5 Recap

39 members and 1 guest enjoyed a warm lovely day on the course.  A nice breeze kept us from getting too hot.  Captains Debra Lissebeck and Wendy Michaels came up with a putting game – won by Teri Esteban, with Karen Krull a close second. Many of us struggled with our putts – but Jennifer Wilson and Angie Charky got prizes for having the most epic struggles!  Closest to the pin on #4 was Teri again, no one made it on the green on #15. Laura Perry, Shannon Blair & Carol Grosvenor shared the chip-in pool.  Helga Olafsson brought yummy cupcakes, a hungry squirrel liked the taste of Laura Kennedy’s ankle, and a nameless member had a wardrobe mishap when the force of her swing loosened all the hooks on her front-closing bra…Thanks to Debra and Wendy for captaining, Judy Mirick, Kathy Malmfeldt & Barbara Trivison for helping with sign-up.

4/30/16 Simi Hills

We had a beautiful day April 30 for our Simi Hills event, cool and a little breezy. 40 members and guests attended.  Thanks to Captains Kathryn Jackson & Susan Watkins, who did a great job with the game – Bingo, Bango, Bongo, and even donated several prizes!  Prize winners were:  Lowest Putts Terry Henschel, Highest Putts Rebecca Waldera; Bingo Bango Bongo - Highest Scores - Tie Susan and Elise Anderson, Lowest Score Sylvia; Chip-ins: Elise, Kathryn, Karen Krull, Jennifer Wilson, Joyce Mussenden, Donna Coleman, Alice Belcher, Debra Dowling, Helga Olafsson. We took over the whole clubhouse for snacks, drinks & socializing after golf.

Big Rec Park 7/10/16

Big Rec Park in Long Beach

It was a long tough day but lots of fun!  Ocean breezes kept the temperature in the 70's most of the day,  and almost all stayed after for munchies and socializing. The focus was on putting, as event Captains Yvonne Guerra and Ayanna Lonian selected "One-putt Poker" as the game of the day.  Those that wanted to play anted up $1, then committed to add $1 to the pot for each 3-putt.  Each 1-putt earned a playing card, and the winners had the best poker hands.  Since the pot was about $100, we split it and had two winners - Alma Robles with two pairs and DeeDee Carter with a flush! DeeDee also scored with a chip-in, as did Angie Charky and Barbara Arnold. Barbara and Debbie Dakouzlian tied for low putts, with 29. Closest to the pin Roger Dunn cards went to Kathryn Jackson on #5 and Barbara Bloom on #16. Lorrie Davis and Kathy Malmfeldt won two-somes at Rec Park in a random draw. Thanks, Ayanna & Yvonne for captaining!

Two of our flight winners, Donna & Tanya, and three of our Scramble team, Jennifer, Alma & Elise, were playing in their first Chapter Championship.

We had a tasty buffet meal, nice tee gifts and lots of prizes for the opportunity drawings, raising $1,000 to help support our Chapter activities. Our photographer, Jeff Lamb, took many pictures, which will be downloaded soon onto our Facebook page and our website.  Thanks to our many wonderful sponsors, our CC committee (Linda Kueny, Laura Perry, Kathy Malmfeldt, Barbara Trivison and Mary Ellen Knowles) and to all others who donated their time (especially Michelle Haag, Linda Bailey, Yvonne Guerra and Laura Kennedy) and/or support to make this such a successful event!

3/19/16 Membership Kick-Off at DeBell

We had 50 breakfast attendees and 41 golfers for a fun & long day! Lots of winners for the prize drawings, congrats to Molly Holmgren for winning the Ogio golf bag, Angie Charky for generating the most leads at the Golf Show, and Judy Mirick for splitting the 50/50 cash with The First Tee of Greater Pasadena. Our scramble team winners were Team 9: Laura Kennedy, Jan Demont, DeeDee Carter and Angie Charky, who took both low gross and low net! Since they couldn't get both prizes, Team 4 (Roberta Kantola, Joni Ward, Jennifer Van Harte and Mitchi Shibata) got low net as next in line. Debra Dowling & Roberta K. won closest to the pin. Thanks to all who helped make this a big success!

3/26/16 Scholl

We had a beautiful Spring day for our March 26th event. The P.R.E.P. School element was Pace of Play, with Debra Lissebeck providing stickers for those who pledged, and our members sharing tips on how to speed up play. The shotgun format allowed us to all finish about the same time, and most of the players headed down the hill to the “19th Hole” at Acapulco Restaurant, for appetizers & drinks. Winners for the day were Karen Share (chip-in), Carol Grosvenor (low putts), Karen White (closet to pin, Hole #7) & Debby Christian (CTP, Hole #11).  Congrats, ladies! It was nice to be joined by guests Marsha Phillips, Paula Rinkovsky and Sharon Timmerman; new members Andrea Zimmer, Donna Coleman, Myrl Wegner, Molly Holmgren & Rebecca Waldera; and returning former members Deanna Hammerli & Caroline Gim. Thanks to Angie Charky & Debra Lissebeck for helping with signup.
