2017 LA Event Recap

1/29/17 Member Mixer

Great Member Mixer !!
On Sunday, January 29, 40 members gathered at the home of Roberta Kantola for a fun evening of food, drink, games and camaraderie. For a few minutes it was hard to recognize each other without our golf gear, so the name tags helped! Thank you to everyone who assisted in many ways, but especially to Roberta Kantola for opening her home to us and Laura Kennedy who made many of the appetizers from scratch. Those amazing bacon wrapped dates? The airy mini pumpkin cheesecake? Want the recipe? You're going to have to golf with Laura Kennedy and beat it out of her.  Or see our Facebook page. ;-) Besides playing golf, our ladies can cook! The group welcomed new members as they nibbled on delicious appetizers. We were so busy visiting that it was tough to get people's attention to complete the games!  Prizes for games & a small drawing rounded out the lovely evening.
Thank you to all the volunteers that make all of our events possible, and to all for attending and making this an amazing event!

2/11/17 Los Robles

  Los Robles Recap 2/11/17

All weekend-golfers pray for their balls to do the right thing, AND they also pray for no rain! With reported showers in Thousand Oaks the night before, and pouring rain/hail/thunder in the Valley early Sat. am, event organizers were on the phone with the golf course early to determine if they'd be open for business, because as long as they're open for play, we're under contract to hold our event. Luckily, our region has microclimates, and our day in Thousand Oaks was glorious, with not a single drop of rain! Unfortunately for the riders, we were cart-path only, but the cloud cover kept the temperature mild, with the sun having eventually come
out for most of the day! Even with the cart-path only restriction, many groups still finished in 4-1/2 hours!
We were lovely in pink and red, as we celebrated an early Valentine's Day by enjoying holiday-themed games. Jayne Geisler and Mary Ayers split the pot for “Green of Hearts," having hit an impressive 3 out of 5 greens on the par 3s. Accurate prognosticators Carol Fishburn, Janice Kuwahara, and Holly Schroeder each correctly predicted their total putts, splitting the "Kiss My Putt" pool. Holly Schroeder and Jean Jones won closest to the pin on holes 8 & 16, respectively. The group of Sylvia Torres, Nancy Reid and Carolyn Thielman managed to "spread the love," each winning a sleeve of balls from the random drawing of the 6 groups that managed to keep their "love (ball)" alive throughout the entire round! Congrats to all the winners and thanks to all who came out to play!

3/11/17 Membership Kickoff

Gorgeous day for our Kickoff event at DeBell on 3/11 with 36 in attendance, including 8 guests!  We also had Ryan Smith, founder of eBob Apparel, on hand to sell EWGA logo hats & visors.  Ryan is just 13 years old, son of OC member Jessie Smith. For every hat he sells, he donates $5 to the EWGA Foundation. From Saturday's proceeds of 22 hats, he will be donating $110 to the foundation.

Carol Grosvenor won a prize pack for the Match Play Pop Quiz by getting all 12 questions answered correctly.  Most people only got 6-7 correct... time to brush up on those Match Play rules! Kathy Malmfeldt won a prize pack drawing of the 3 members who brought guests to the event.
Most stayed behind for 9 holes of golf -- game of the day was a team eclectic (play your own ball, best gross score  per hole is the team's score) designed by our events director Debra. Winning team was Kathy Malmfeldt, Joyce Shelton, Faith Ford, and new member Cheronka Townsend with a team score of 39 for 9 holes. Closest to the Pin winner was Nancy Reid. (We'll get you  your prize at the next event.)

4/15/17 Simi Hills

A Hoppin' Good Time was had by Every-Bunny at Simi Hills!

Saturday proved to be a great day for golf once the mist cleared and the sun came out. What made the day even better were our Captains,
Kaoru Wood and Jennifer Wilson, who provided some creative Easter-themed fun and games that were enjoyed by all, including a highly-coveted basket that was up for grabs (with the help of some cute little bunnies)!  Winners of closest to the pin on holes 4 & 17 were Debra Lissebeck and Nancy Reid, respectively. Winners of the Quota Game were Dee-Dee Carter (1st), Mitchi Shibata (2nd), Debby Christian & Barbara Trivison (tied for 3rd), and Shannon Blair & Nancy Reid (tied for 4th), who all went home with handfuls of CASH! Karen Share also went home with a fatter wallet by having the most 1-putts (9 of them! WOW!), and Roberta Kantola became the envy of the field by going home with the ADORABLE basket of goodies!
Thank you, Jennifer and Kaoru for all your hard work-A fantastic time was had by all!

2017 California Cup

2017 Cal Cup! I'm seeing STARS!!

Thanks to Laura Kennedy for being an outstanding Captain to the LA Stars this weekend in Palm Springs. Keeping 11 ladies in line is a tough task but you did an awesome job choosing our outfits, answering the million and one questions we had, keeping our spirits up and just being an all around great gal! Love our bag of star gifts! Whenever I wear my tiara, I'll think of you! ~ Roberta Kantola

Final Results?? We didn't win the cup, but we looked AMAZING and we sure had a lot of fun!!

5/24/17 Lorena Ochoa Invitational

21 EWGA-LA members - almost 25% of the field!- signed up to play in this fun tournament May 24 at Valencia Country Club.  Attendees enjoyed challenging golf, fun games, lots of prizes and drawings and good food.  The highlights were on-course tips and photo opps with Lorena, and donating to her Foundation.  We were well represented, with the team of Mary Ayers, Didde Chastain, Carol Grosvenor and Wendy Michaels taking low net, and Kathy Malmfeldt, Janice Kuwahara and Debby Christian "winning" high net. Be sure to join us next year for this fun tourney.

6/10/17 Oak Quarry

The sun was kind enough to sleep in a few hours last Saturday as we teed off at this member-favorite on a cool and overcast morning. Course management and accuracy were the focal points of the game of the day as players did their best to earn points by hitting fairways and  scoring on the greens. Congratulations to our winners (including closest-to-the-pin contests): Roberta Kantola, Barbara Trivison, Mary Ayers, Laura Kennedy and Debby Christian. Very nice to have Dennis Ayers join us, representing our sponsor NSBN!

Thanks to all for a fantastic turnout and overall GREAT PACE OF PLAY at a challenging, yet fun course!

7/8/17 Lakewood

It was a hot and humid day, but that didn't stop our full field of 40 spirited ladies from having fun!  The game of the day was a version of
"Bingo-Bango-Bongo,"  featured a winner in every group, and encouraged players to focus on short-game skills in order to earn points. Winners included Lauren Suzuki, Jayne Geisler, Laura Kennedy, Shannon Blair, Roberta Kantola,Nancy Reid, Jean Jones, Kaoru Wood, Kathy Malmfeldt, and Nike Irwin.
Lauren Suzuki and Jennifer Wilson won closest-to-the-pin contests! Thanks to all who braved the heat and made the day a success!

Next stop River Ridge for the PMS Cup! See you there!!

8/26/17 PMS Cup

Thank you to all of our competitors who played at River Ridge this weekend -- it was the largest participation of the event in years! Our PMS Cup series with Santa Barbara is a long standing match play series that started in 2001.  (PMS stands for Perpetual Match-Play Series)

Unfortunately, we came up short against Santa Barbara, 6-3, despite some excellent team performances!
We also celebrated Angie Charky's birthday (who won her match!). Jen Wilson won the only closest to the pin. The other closest to the pin was hijacked by men playing before our tournament, who turned ours into the proshop... doh!  Kaoru won both of the raffle prizes for more rounds at River Ridge. Well done, L.A. ladies!

9/9/17 San Dimas Canyon

We had a nice break in the weather for a relatively mild day at San Dimas Canyon.  There were lot of prizes and an occasional deer sighting. Kathleen Strong and Roberta Kantola split the low putt pot, while Carol Fishburn and Laura Kumazawa did the same with chip-ins.  The course donated prizes for closest to the pin on all 5 Par 3’s, with the following winners: Kaoru Wood #2, Liz Gnerre #5 & #16, Laura Kennedy #7, and Janice Okanishi #10. Laura Kennedy won the team spirit award, just edging out Kathleen, and Wendy Michaels won the O.N.E.S. game.  Most of the players stayed after for appetizers and socializing, and were additionally rewarded by several more prizes won through a random draw. Thanks to Diane Okamoto and Kathy Malmfeldt for being co-captains for the day.

10/14/17 Play for Pink

It was a beautiful if windy day at Elkins Ranch raising money for Play for Pink. Thanks to everyone who contributed! We gave out lots of prizes for games and the donation raffle. A special shout-out to Joyce Mussenden who donated her 50/50 raffle winnings back to the charity. Thanks to Wendy Michaels' matching funds, we raised over $6200 for Play for Pink. We also would like to recognize and thank Holly Schroeder who led the committee to bring about our very successful first Play for Pink event.

11/4/17 Alondra

Twenty-one intrepid souls ventured down to Alondra Golf Course in Lawndale for our November EGWA-LA event. The course was in good shape with soft greens showing little evidence of aeration earlier in the week. Co-captains Liz Gnerre and Kaoru Wood introduced participants to the day's two games: Gibble Gabble Gobble, where strategy came into play as each golfer strove to be first on the green, closest to the hole, and first to putt out, and Turkey Tussle, which led to fierce competition among our six groups to have the lowest net score on each hole in order to retain possession of the turkey plush toys. The scorecards were tallied and we had nine separate winners, including two new members. Triumphant in the Turkey Tussle were Lisa Nam, Barbara Trivison, Wendy Michaels, Janice Okanishi, and newcomers Stacy Ewart and Christine Johnson. In addition to the much sought-after turkeys, each winner got a Roger Dunn gift card, which they were anxious to use the next day at our annual shopping event. Winners of cash prizes for Gibble Gabble Gobble were Liz Gnerre with 19 points, Carolyn Thielman with 23 points, and winning by a country mile with a whopping 34 points, Carol Grosvenor. It was a fun outing with good weather and a great group of friends old and new.

12/1/17 Scholl Canyon Annual Holiday Golf & Party

Thank you to the 53 members that joined us for Scholl Golf & Holiday Party!!
Roberta Kantola organized a "Most Festive Outfit" contest -- and as you can see, we were a very colorful bunch! Congratulations to Jennifer Wilson who won the contest as one of Santa's elves. Some of those "beautiful" Christmas sweaters & outfits were too warm for the sunny & hot round at Scholl. Congratulations to Lorrie Davis, Jayne Geisler, Maureen Kelly & Debra Dowling, winners of the closest to the pin contest. Congrats to Wendy Michaels on her very first eagle, on #10!
Congratulations to Kaoru Wood, our 2017 Most Improved Golfer! Her index improved from 27 down to 20 this year, a 26% improvement. WOW!

Thank you to our generous sponsors that have supported us this year: Roger Dunn, NSBN, LLC, 1st & 10th Tee Bars. Thank you to all of our members that donated prizes...Thank you, Donna Coleman for collecting, coordinating & wrapping the prizes!! We raised over $2,400 for the chapter!  THANK YOU!!
